Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter is gearing up to host an exciting global panel of experts from the World Craft Council as it enters the final stages of its bid for World Craft City status.

The UK government has announced (17 March 2025) that it will “commence a review into the British Hallmarking Council (BHC) which will look at the role, remit and governance of the BHC.

The Goldsmiths’ Foundation has appointed a new Board of Trustees to lead the charity as it renews its focus on support for vocational skills, the crafts of jewellery and silversmithing, and the wider creative industries.

The Royal Mint has today submitted 6,432 coins for testing at the UK’s oldest judicial ceremony, the Trial of the Pyx, at Goldsmiths’ Hall in the City of London.

A highlight of this year’s submission is a silver sixpence made from silver recovered from expired medical and industrial x-ray films.

The Trial of The Pyx has taken place at Goldsmiths’ Hall, in the City of London since 1871, and in 2025 we are giving a limited number of people the unique opportunity to experience a judicial ceremony which is as important today as it was in 1248!

Over the last 189 years Goldsmiths’ Hall has seen many splendid celebrations, fantastic dinners, informative lectures, spectacular exhibitions, fabulous fairs, exhilarating film shoots and an untold number of very important visitors, including actors, celebrities, politicians, members of the Royal Family, and now you!

For the 2025 Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council (GC&DC) Awards, The London Assay Office is challenging entrants to submit a 2D design for a sterling silver (925) spoon which proudly bears the London Hallmark, and can be used as a personal, practical and portable piece of cutlery for every meal “from porridge to pudding”.

Annie Warburton, Chief Executive and Clerk of The Goldsmiths’ Company has been awarded Fellowship of the City and Guilds of London Institute – the highest honour that the Council can confer on an individual – in recognition of her personal contribution to, and support of, technical education and training, her commitment to skills development and her career-long commitment to equity and diversity. 

On Wednesday 16 October 2024 we welcomed ten aspiring craftspeople to Goldsmiths’ Hall, to begin their Goldsmiths’ Company Apprenticeships and sign the Apprentice Records at a Binding Ceremony.

This, almost 700-year-old tradition, marks the official start of their apprenticeship, during which they will learn and practice their skills under the guidance of a Master Craftsperson.

The UK's first cohort of Craft and Design T Level jewellery students, studying at Aston University Engineering Academy (AUEA) in Birmingham, began their training this month with a visit to the Goldsmiths' Company at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London this week – the historic home of the jewellery industry – to participate in a creative inspiration day, part of the course’s integral work experience programme.
